We want to use Huurprijshulp to ensure that the balance in the rental housing market is restored by 2025. Let us explain well what we mean by that:
- We are straightening out the “position of power” between tenants and landlords. Tenants no longer need to have doubts about whether they dare to stand up for themselves, but they can be confident that they are well protected by Dutch law and that (together with us) they are able to claim it.
- By doing so, we ensure that all tenants in the Netherlands who are affected by the high rents and, as a result, do not have the space to build their future or enjoy life the way they want, will take action and lower their rent.
- By repeating this action over and over again, as much as we can, we ensure the restoration of balance. We are shifting the standard for pricing from “market forces” to “regulation,” shifting the perception of what a rental property should cost. This triggers the counter cycle that has been missing in recent years; more renters will realize they are losing out in life by giving away money to the landlord every month that they don’t have to and want to take action to reduce. Landlords will feel the regulation of the Dutch government and feel less incentive to invest their income in yet another property, who knows, maybe they will instead decide to sell and there will be room for residential tenants to move on.
- That doesn’t mean we think we can help every tenant in the Netherlands. We sometimes get responses from children whose “anyway the parents pay for the house and so it doesn’t matter.” We believe that people who can come up with these kinds of reasons to donate thousands of dollars over the years to someone who doesn’t need it, indeed don’t need it themselves and accept that we no longer add “real value” there. Fortunately, that group is small and we don’t need every individual to shift the balance in our rental housing market
